Statement

I paint the moments that almost disappeared. Working from found photographs and direct observation, I paint ordinary life caught unaware — a figure mid-turn, still life holding the memory of a space recently occupied, people in relationship and alone, living their day without awareness of being observed.

I grew up the youngest in a large family, more comfortable observing than participating. That early instinct, to find the quiet vantage point and witness without interrupting, shapes everything I make. I'm interested in what an ordinary day looked like when nobody was performing it.

I work in alla prima oils, en plein air and in the studio. Alla prima painting, wet into wet, completed in a single session, fits these subjects because it shares their nature: immediate, unrepeatable, alive. My subjects are primarily naturally lit, whether by window light or open air, painted with energetic brushstrokes that negotiate realism and abstraction. What I'm after is the unrepeatable moment, caught before it disappears.

What People Are Saying

“I purchased one of Andie’s customized paintings for each of my four children with their name on it. Each of her paintings were displayed in my babies room for years. I now have them displayed together in our laundry room and they still make me smile and remind me of their younger years.”
— Krista Wells, West Hartford, Connecticut

"Andie Freeman's exquisitely gentle paintings transform ordinary objects into profound reminders of the beauty and mystery of everyday life."
